What the Tanaka Honke Museum Reception Hall Is

The Tanaka Honke Museum Reception Hall (田中本家博物館客殿, kyakuden) is a two-storey guest pavilion built in 1895 by the Tanaka merchant family in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 September 2003.

It stands east of the living wing of the Former Main House, joined to it by a covered corridor. The timber building runs long from east to west under an hip-and-gable roof laid with pantiles, with a narrow skirt of eaves wrapped around it below the main roof. The building area is 120 square metres.

The records name the master carpenter: Harada Torakichi of Suzaka. Knowing who built it is rare for a private house of this period.

Why the Reception Hall Was Registered

Of the twenty buildings on the estate, only the Tanaka Honke Museum Reception Hall was registered as difficult to reproduce. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as refined sukiya-style work, made with a wealth of prized timber and finished with precision down to the smallest joinery.

Suzaka City makes the same point in plainer terms: this was the room for important guests, so no expense was spared on the wood. Rebuilding it would need both the timber and the craftsmanship, and neither is easy to find now.

The Agency also notes how open the hall is to the garden. Where a storehouse protects itself with thick walls, the Reception Hall is meant to be opened up, its sliding doors pulled back so the room and the garden become one space.

What to Look For: A Room Built for the View

The hall exists to face the large garden to the north. From across the pond, the hipped gable, the upper-floor room and the garden stones line up in a single picture, with mountains beyond. Garden and building were planned together.

Up close, follow the small eave that circles the building and look at the timber in the posts and rails: clear, knot-free wood, matched in colour, with corners finished cleanly.

The Bathhouse, built at about the same time, stands just east of the hall, and the Chunikai stands to the south. The Chunikai is said to have stood on this very spot before being moved to make room. Read the three together as a suite for receiving guests.

Visiting the Reception Hall

The exterior of the Tanaka Honke Museum Reception Hall can be seen from the garden paths on any opening day. The best overall view is from the north side of the pond, and it is at its finest when the maples turn in autumn.
