Taimadera Temple Yakushido Hall: A Small Muromachi-Period Hall from 1447
Taimadera Temple Yakushido Hall (當麻寺薬師堂, Taimadera Yakushidō) is a mid-Muromachi-period Buddhist hall built in 1447 at Taimadera in Taima, Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, and designated an Important Cultural Property in 1971.
The Taimadera Temple Yakushido Hall does not stand in the central compound. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as sitting on a detached plot of the temple grounds. You find it to the northeast of the main approach, beyond the Yakushi Gate, and the temple's parking directions also mention the area around that gate.
Three Bays by Three
The Yakushido Hall is three bays wide and three deep, single-storied, under a fully hipped (yosemune) roof of hongawara tiles. With the same number of bays on each side, it is what Japanese architects call a hosangen-do, a square three-bay hall. Next to the five-bay Golden Hall and the seven-bay Lecture Hall, it is modest in size.
According to the Agency, the interior uses round pillars to frame a sanctuary one bay square. A square core of one bay inside a square shell of three bays: small as the building is, it cleanly separates the space for the enshrined image from the space around it.
The Agency singles out the design of the front as typical of its period. The treatment of the openings and posts across the facade shows a different hand from the Kamakura-period Golden Hall and Lecture Hall.
The Only Muromachi Building Among Taimadera's Designated Structures
Taimadera's designated buildings run through the ancient and medieval periods: the Nara-period East Pagoda, the Heian-period West Pagoda and Main Hall, the Kamakura-period Golden Hall and Lecture Hall. The Taimadera Temple Yakushido Hall adds the mid-Muromachi period to that sequence.
It was designated in 1971, more than seventy years after the Golden Hall and Lecture Hall were listed in 1899. The Agency explains the designation by calling it a building to be preserved as part of the temple's ensemble, a compound famous for its east and west pagodas. In other words, it was valued both for itself and for carrying the story of the Taimadera compound forward into the Muromachi period.
Seeing the Yakushido Hall
The temple's visitor guide lists no interior viewing for the Taimadera Temple Yakushido Hall, and it is not part of the three-hall ticket sold in the Main Hall. A visit centres on the exterior.
Start at the front. The posts and fittings across the three bays of the facade are the design the Agency highlights. Then walk to the side and check that it, too, has three bays; that square plan is the whole idea of the building.
