Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse: an Edo sutra repository facing the path
Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse (正法寺護国蔵) is the sutra repository of Shoboji Temple in the Izumi district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1704 and made a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011 under registration number 15-0337.
It stands south of the main hall, turning its west face to the approach path. The building is 5.0 m square with a floor area of 34 m², a single-storey Dozo-zukuri structure under a Hōgyō-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki tiles, with a one-bay Kōhai over the entrance. It is the oldest of the six registered buildings at Shoboji Temple, and was repaired twice, in 1795 and again in 1897.
What a sutra repository is for
A kyozo holds the temple's scriptures. Paper has to be kept from fire and damp, which is why repositories are so often built as thick-walled storehouses. Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse belongs to that tradition, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs rates it as a repository of standard Edo-period scale. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
Inside, a Buddhist altar occupies the centre and shelving for the scriptures runs along the sides and the rear wall. A storehouse with an object of worship at its heart is both strongroom and chapel, and the name Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse marks the building as a place of prayer rather than mere storage.
A temple face on a storehouse frame
What rewards attention at Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse is the way storehouse construction and temple architecture share one small building. The outer walls are plastered in Shikkui over an enclosed frame, with the posts buried in the wall against fire. Step inside and the treatment reverses: the interior is Shinkabe, with the posts exposed, over a boarded floor and a joist ceiling.
The eaves are what catch the eye outside. Three-stepped brackets sit on a head-tie beam, with Kaerumata as the intermediate support between them, and the rafters are laid in the closely spaced double-eave manner. Above the sealed plaster wall runs the same vocabulary of bracketing used on the main hall. Add the pyramidal roof and the kohai, and from a distance the building reads as a small Buddhist hall.
Its orientation looks deliberate. Anyone walking from the gate toward the main hall meets this west face first. The contrast between the white wall and the shadow under the eaves is sharpest on a clear day.
Visiting Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse
Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse stands on the eastern side of the approach, and the front can be taken in while walking past. Facing west, it catches the light on its front in the afternoon. The bracketing and the frog-leg struts are hard to read from directly below, so step back to the far side of the path and look up.
The interior is not open. The altar, the scripture shelving, the joist ceiling and the exposed interior framing all have to be taken on trust. The storehouse stands immediately north of Shoboji Temple Gokoku Storehouse with its ridge running east to west, and the two wall planes can be seen together from the western side of the path.
