Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall: a small hall facing east
Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall (正法寺観音堂) is a Buddhist hall in the precinct of Shoboji Temple in the Izumi district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, dated to the first half of the 1700s and made a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011 under registration number 15-0336.
It stands southwest of the main hall and faces east. At 8.3 m across the front, 5.8 m deep and 51 m² in floor area it is a modest building, roofed in Irimoya-zukuri with Sangawara-buki tiles and fronted by a one-bay Kōhai. The bell tower is its immediate neighbour to the south.
A hall of the precinct rather than of the temple's centre
Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it an example of an early modern precinct hall: not a building at the heart of temple ritual, like the main hall, but a smaller one set in a corner of the grounds.
A separate hall for Kannon Bosatsu is a common enough feature at Soto Zen temples. Keeping the object of popular devotion outside the main hall lets daily monastic practice and lay worship run side by side. Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall preserves that arrangement in a small mid-Edo building.
Full-scale partitioning in a small hall
The plan is what makes this building interesting. The hall is divided north and south, and only the southern half serves as the hall proper, with the Naijin and Gejin set side by side on an east-west line. Since the building faces east, moving inward from the entrance means moving west: outer sanctuary first, inner sanctuary beyond. The northern half is given over to a storeroom and a side chamber.
Between the two sanctuaries stands a partition built from a Kōryō and Kumimono with carved nose brackets. That is the kind of division found in far larger halls, brought into a building only 8.3 m wide, and it shows that the interior of Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall was never treated as an outbuilding.
Seen from outside, only the single bay under the kohai is finished as a front; the northern half is kept plain. The difference in use reads straight off the elevation.
Visiting Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall
Because Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall faces east, the front is best seen in the morning. Later in the day shadow gathers under the kohai and the outlines of the nose brackets and rafters become hard to follow. A few steps southwest from the front of the main hall bring both the front and the flank of the hall into one view.
The interior is not open. The east-west arrangement of the sanctuaries and the altar platform cannot be checked from outside, so plan accordingly. The bell tower stands just south of Shoboji Temple Kannon Hall; to frame the two together, stand on the southeast side.
