Shoboji Temple Main Gate: a four-legged gate carrying a dragon
Shoboji Temple Main Gate (正法寺山門) is the Shikyakumon opening on the south side of the precinct of Shoboji Temple in the Izumi district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, dated to the later Edo period and made a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011 under registration number 15-0340.
The gate is 3.0 m wide, roofed in Kirizuma-zukuri with Sangawara-buki tiles and fronted by a Noki-karahafu. Its exact date has never been fixed, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs records only the later Edo period. It stands at the southern edge of the grounds, with the approach running straight north from it to the main hall.
Registered as the entrance to the precinct
Shoboji Temple Main Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. It marks the start of the approach, it is the first structure anyone entering passes through, and it is the face the temple turns to the road.
A shikyakumon carries two main posts with a pair of supporting posts before and behind them, four in all, and the type has long been used for the inner and outer gates of temples and shrines. Shoboji Temple Main Gate follows that standard, but the amount of carving on it goes well beyond the standard.
Where the effort went
Start with the frame. The main posts are round and the supporting posts square, and the main posts are carried up without a break to the ridge beam, so the weight of the roof runs cleanly to the ground. Kōryō beams and penetrating ties lock the frame, plain three-stepped brackets sit above, and Ebi-kōryō curve between the main and supporting posts. The rafters are laid in the closely spaced double-eave manner.
On that frame, Shoboji Temple Main Gate spends heavily on carving. A dragon rides the beam between the main posts, and mythical beasts are cut into the beams and the nose brackets. The carving is gathered overhead, at exactly the height at which someone walking through would raise their eyes, so the passage of a few seconds is built around a look upward.
The curved gable over the entrance does decorative work as well. Its arc breaks the straight line of the roof and frames the space beneath it where the carving sits. A plain gabled roof was chosen, and then the front alone was dressed up.
Visiting Shoboji Temple Main Gate
Shoboji Temple Main Gate is the entrance to the grounds, so there is no restriction on passing through it at any hour. To look at the carving, stop about three paces short and look up; walk right underneath and the dragon on the beam between the main posts drops out of view.
The gate faces south, so light falls on the front through the middle of the day. If you want the carving to read in strong relief, morning or late afternoon, when the light comes in at an angle, suits better. The curved gable and the roofline are clearest from outside the gate, the sweep of the curved connecting beams from within.
Just inside Shoboji Temple Main Gate lies a stone called the Okoshikake-ishi, where the Noh master Zeami is said to have sat. Look down as soon as you have passed through and it is easy to find.
