A Gate Wearing a Tall Wall for a Crown

The Ichikawa Family Residence (Former Kameoka Family Villa) Front Gate and Wall (市川家住宅（旧亀岡家別荘）表門及び塀) is a late-Taishō-era gateway and boundary wall, built between 1919 and 1926, in Tezukayama-nishi, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, and was entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 August 2024. Its registration number is 27-0909.

It forms the street front of a villa built for the Kameoka family, merchants from Senba in central Osaka, and stands on the west side of the lot just south of the storehouse. The gate is an udegi-mon, a gate whose eaves rest on projecting bracket arms, set back slightly from the street. It is timber, roofed in tile with some copper, and 1.5 metres wide, with Sodobei sleeve walls on either side. The timber boundary wall, also tiled, runs for 15 metres in total.

The Front Gate and Wall of the Ichikawa Family Residence were registered on the same day as the main house and storehouse, under the same criterion of contributing to the historic landscape.

Why the Ichikawa Family Residence Front Gate Is Listed

The unusual feature of the Ichikawa Family Residence gate is the tall wall that rises from the top of its roof, faced in narrow batten-jointed tiles. A light bracket-arm gate would normally end at its own eaves; here a second, higher layer sits above it, stretching the outline upward. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the result as a distinctive appearance.

The doorway is doubled. Behind a pair of sliding lattice doors hang a pair of solid board doors. With the board doors open, the lattice still screens the entrance from the street.

Each sleeve wall has its own small copper-roofed pentroof, and a service door opens on the north side. Further walls attach in front of the sleeves on both sides, so the whole composition spreads outward from the gate. Seeing gate and walls together shows how a suburban villa of the Taishō years presented itself to the street.

What to Look For at the Gate

Everything worth seeing at the Ichikawa Family Residence gate faces the street. Start with the two-tier silhouette: the gate roof, then the tall wall above it. Up close, the tall wall is faced in a different kind of tile from the gate roof below it.

Then look at the doorway. When the board doors stand open you can see how the lattice doors sit in front of them. The copper pentroofs over the sleeve walls lighten the composition against the heavier tiles of the gate itself, and the small service door on the north side serves everyday comings and goings.

Just north of the gate, the registered storehouse closes the end of the lane. Gate, wall and white storehouse together make one of the best-preserved corners of old Tezukayama.

The Ichikawa Family Residence (Former Kameoka Family Villa) Front Gate and Wall belong to a private home, and you cannot pass through the gate. There are no opening hours or fees, but because the gate and wall face the street, the exterior can be seen from the road.
