A Light Bracket-Arm Gate into the South Garden

The Ichikawa Family Residence (Former Kameoka Family Villa) South Middle Gate (市川家住宅（旧亀岡家別荘）南中門) is a late-Taishō-era garden gate, built between 1919 and 1926, in Tezukayama-nishi, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, and was entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 August 2024. Its registration number is 27-0911.

It stands inside the grounds of a villa built for the Kameoka family, Senba merchants from central Osaka, on the south side of the path between the front gate and the main entrance, and opens onto the south garden. It is an udegi-mon, a gate whose eaves rest on projecting bracket arms: timber, roofed in iron sheet, 1.2 metres wide, with Sodobei sleeve walls on both sides capped with tiles laid face down. It was renovated in the late Shōwa era.

Across the path stands the North Middle Gate and Waiting Arbor, also registered. At the Ichikawa Family Residence, two middle gates flank the short walk to the entrance, one leading guests into the north courtyard, the other into the south garden.

Why the Ichikawa Family Residence South Middle Gate Is Listed

The South Middle Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a light, graceful gate designed to welcome guests arriving along the path.

Its posts, ridge beam and lintel are logs with the bark left on. The front beam is menkawa timber, a squared piece that keeps a strip of the log's rounded surface at each corner, and it has been finished by adze in a rippled texture known as naguri. Letting the natural shape of the tree show in this way is a signature of the sukiya style, the same thinking behind the Menkawa-bashira post.

The pair of board doors is framed in the manner of a Chinese-style panelled door, with a cusped kōzama panel above. Roofing the gate in thin iron sheet keeps the eave edge slender, so the whole gate reads lighter than one carrying heavy tiles.

What to Look For

The detail to seek out on the Ichikawa Family Residence South Middle Gate is the front beam. When light falls across it at a low angle, the adze marks of the naguri finish show as fine ripples.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs record even includes a photograph of the underside of the roof, taken from the north-east. The choice of bark-on logs reaches all the way up to the ridge beam, so the care continues overhead, where only a guest passing beneath would notice it.

The sleeve walls are capped with tiles laid face down in a row, a different material from the iron-sheet roof of the gate itself. Two textures of roof side by side are part of the design.

The Ichikawa Family Residence (Former Kameoka Family Villa) South Middle Gate stands inside private grounds behind the front gate. It is not open to the public, has no opening hours or fees, and sits partway along the inner path, so it is hard to see from outside.
