The south gate of Daikai Shrine
Sumiyoshi Taisha Daikai Shrine South Small Gate (住吉大社摂社大海神社南小門) is a late Edo-period munamon gate in the sacred fence on the south side of the front of Daikai Shrine, a subsidiary shrine of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved to its present site around 1881 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It has a gabled tiled roof and is 2.6 metres wide.
Daikai Shrine (大海神社, Daikai-jinja) lies north of the main sanctuary and enshrines Toyotamahiko and Toyotamahime. Its main hall of 1708, built in the Sumiyoshi style, is an Important Cultural Property. The South Small Gate stands on the south side of its front, paired with the North Small Gate.
A short post and a curved roof
The main posts are round, with square braces in front and behind. The ridge beam rests on a short post set on the lintel, the roof has a gentle upward curve, and a plum-blossom pendant hangs in the gable. The official description says that, small as it is, the gate completes the setting of the shrine front together with its twin.
The difference from the north gate lies above the lintel. The north gate fills the space with a horizontal rail; the Sumiyoshi Taisha Daikai Shrine South Small Gate uses a single post. With the curved roof and the pendant, this 2.6-metre gate has a softer outline when seen head-on.
The national database dates the move to around 1881. The north gate is recorded only as moved in the early Meiji period, so the two may have been set up together, though the record does not confirm it. Those early Meiji years saw the removal of the shrine's Buddhist temple and the reduction of its grounds, and the front of Daikai Shrine was probably rearranged at the same time.
What to look for, and visiting
From in front of the West Gate of Daikai Shrine, an Important Cultural Property, look along the fence to the south to find the gate. Check the post and pendant, then compare the rail on the north gate. The Daikai Shrine area is heavily wooded and feels quieter and darker than the open main sanctuary.
The exterior of the Sumiyoshi Taisha Daikai Shrine South Small Gate can be seen freely during opening hours, at no charge. Daikai Shrine's annual festival on October 13 draws many people whose work is connected with the sea. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
