The largest torii, at the main entrance

Sumiyoshi Taisha West Great Torii Gate (住吉大社西大鳥居, nishi-ōtorii) is the stone torii at the head of the main approach to Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. The national database dates it to the early Edo period. It is 6.1 metres wide and 6.4 metres high, the largest of the shrine's torii.

Step off the Hankai tram at Sumiyoshi Toriimae, literally "in front of the Sumiyoshi torii", and it is right across the road. The stop is named after it.

Thick proportions, old form

The design is a textbook Myōjin torii: round pillars leaning slightly inward, a tie beam passing through them, and two upswept lintels on top. What the official description stresses is the proportion of the members. The pillars and the top lintel are thick, and that heavy, stable profile is what marks it as an older form.

A stone torii copies the shape of a timber one in another material, and part of the bulk is simply what stone needs. Still, set it beside a slender modern torii and the difference in period is clear. In 1919 a pair of square-pillared torii were added at the side approaches to the left and right, framing the Sumiyoshi Taisha West Great Torii Gate.

It also anchors a set. The great torii on the north, south and east sides follow the same form at a slightly smaller size, and together the four mark the boundary of the precinct on every side. The north torii is actually a touch taller at 6.5 metres; the west gate is the largest by span.

What to look for, and visiting

Stand in front of it and the crown of the arched bridge shows through the opening. The main approach runs straight east from here over the bridge, through the Kaku Torii and the Kojumon Gate to the First Sanctuary. Because every main hall faces west, this torii sits on the axis of the sanctuaries.

The Sumiyoshi Taisha West Great Torii Gate stands on the street side of the grounds, so you can see it at any hour; to walk through and up the approach, come during opening hours. Photographs of a tram passing the torii are a local favourite, but do not step onto the tracks or the road to take them. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
