A water shrine by the sacred pond

Sumiyoshi Taisha Tatsusha Main Hall (住吉大社末社龍社本殿) is a late Edo-period sanctuary on the edge of the shrine pond in front of the Shinkan zone at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved to its present site in 1929 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It is one bay square, entered from the gable end, with a tiled roof and a floor area of 6.7 square metres.

Tatsusha, the "dragon shrine", is dedicated to Mizuhanome, a water goddess. According to the shrine's website it was once called Miidono-sha, the shrine of the sacred well, and also known as the Dragon Palace; it is said to mark the sacred well of the sea god's palace in the myth of Umisachi and Yamasachi, the same tradition attached to Daikai Shrine.

An inner room with no floor, and a well

The plan has an inner and outer room, with the outer room left open and a board door between them, the Sumiyoshi-derived arrangement common to the small shrines here. But the inner room has no floor, and in its centre is a well. The official description calls the Sumiyoshi Taisha Tatsusha Main Hall a building that shows directly how closely Sumiyoshi's faith is tied to water deities.

A shrine built over a well is, in effect, the well's shelter. The old name and the well at its heart make clear that what is worshipped here is water itself. The Sumiyoshi gods are sea gods and gods of ritual purification, and holy places connected with water are scattered throughout the grounds.

Built in the late Edo period, it was moved to the pond's edge in 1929. Setting a water deity's shrine beside the pond spanned by the arched bridge was probably a deliberate choice, though the record confirms only the date of the move.

What to look for, and visiting

The Sumiyoshi Taisha Tatsusha Main Hall stands by the shrine pond; walk from the south side of the arched bridge toward the Shinkan zone to find it. The inner room is closed and the well cannot be seen, but you can look at the open outer room, the board door and the small building at the water's edge.

The exterior can be seen during opening hours, at no charge. Its festival is on October 16. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
