The front gate of the main sanctuary
Sumiyoshi Taisha Kojumon Gate (住吉大社幸寿門, Kōjumon) is an early Edo-period four-legged gate at the centre of the front of the main sanctuary of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved to its present site in 1970 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It is 4.6 metres wide under a gabled copper roof.
Walk the main approach from the West Great Torii over the arched bridge and past the Kaku Torii, and this is the gate that takes you into the enclosure of the four main halls. Beside it stands the Kofukumon Gate of the same size, and the two form the sanctuary's front.
Three layers above the doors
The detailing is unusual. The brackets on the posts are three-bearing blocks with a sub-bracket, the gable is decorated with a rainbow beam (kōryō) carrying a frog-leg strut (kaerumata), and a plum-blossom pendant hangs from the bargeboards. The real interest is above the doors. Between the lintel and the ridge beam the builders inserted a second rainbow beam, with a frog-leg strut beneath it and a vase-shaped strut (taiheizuka) above. Three horizontal members stack up, with carved blocks filling the gaps.
The official description calls this arrangement distinctive and says it gives the Sumiyoshi Taisha Kojumon Gate the dignity expected of the sanctuary's front gate. The neighbouring Kofukumon has the same size and form, but plain block-and-bracket supports and only a simple strut over the doors. The contrast makes the hierarchy between the main gate and the side gate plain.
Built in the early Edo period, it was moved here with the Kofukumon in 1970. Even so, the Agency counts both as surviving examples of early Edo design in the grounds. Since the four main halls are a rebuilding of 1810, the front gate actually preserves an older generation of design than the halls it leads to.
What to look for, and visiting
You can see the carvings from outside, but stand under the gate and look up to see how the three horizontal members stack. Then walk to the Kofukumon and look at the same spot; what the Agency calls restraint becomes obvious.
The Sumiyoshi Taisha Kojumon Gate is the worshippers' entrance to the main halls, open to anyone while the inner precinct is open, with no charge. The inner precinct closes at 5:00 p.m. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
