A storehouse for books, given by booksellers

Sumiyoshi Taisha Obunko Library (住吉大社御文庫, Obunko) is an earthen-walled storehouse for books north of the main sanctuary of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, built around 1723, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10 and designated an Osaka Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property on 2025/03/24. It is a two-storey dozō storehouse with a hipped tiled roof and a floor area of 28 square metres.

In 1723 twenty publishers belonging to the booksellers' guilds of Osaka, Kyoto and Edo petitioned to donate a storehouse in which to dedicate their books to the shrine. A shrine library normally holds the texts the shrine itself needs, but the Obunko received large numbers of new books from publishers and opened them to readers, which is why Osaka Prefecture notes that it is sometimes called the oldest library in Osaka.

A guild that has kept going for 300 years

After it was built, a confraternity called the Sumiyoshi Obunko-ko took charge of it, airing the books, checking and repairing them and compiling catalogues. In 1910 it merged with a similar body founded in 1730 for the library at Osaka Tenmangu, becoming the Osaka Shorin Obunko-ko, which continues to this day. The prefecture's designation report calls the building an Edo-period library without parallel in the prefecture, both for its origins as a booksellers' gift open to the public and for the fact that a local organisation still runs it.

The walls are white plaster with a namako dado of tiles set in raised plaster joints. The windows are round openings closed by iron shutters framed in octagons: one on the north side of the ground floor and two on each of the north and south sides above. Over the front door hangs a cusped karahafu canopy, decorated with a rainbow beam, a frog-leg strut and a vase-shaped strut. Judging from the drawing in the original petition and the style of its carving, the canopy is thought to have been added in the late Edo period.

The Sumiyoshi Taisha Obunko Library originally stood about 30 metres further west, north of the Second Sanctuary, and was moved to its present position in the early Showa period. It survived the fire of 1802 that destroyed the main halls, and it was repaired in 2011.

What to look for, and visiting

Look at the cusped canopy over the front and at the octagon-framed round windows on the sides. White plaster, the namako dado and iron-shuttered windows mark it as a storehouse dressed up with the formality of a shrine building.

The interior is not open. Since the 2025 prefectural designation, its record as a national registered property no longer appears in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database. The exterior can be seen during opening hours, at no charge. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
