The largest gate, beyond the South Gate and stone stage
Sumiyoshi Taisha South Middle Gate (住吉大社南中門, Minami Chūmon) is a late Edo-period four-legged gate on the path behind the Shinkan zone that runs from the South Gate past the Ishibutai stone stage at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved to its present site in 1963 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It has a gabled roof of full clay tiles and is 5.3 metres wide, the largest gate at the shrine.
This is the southern edge of the grounds. The South Gate, an Important Cultural Property, leads to the Ishibutai, a raised stone stage that is also an Important Cultural Property. The South Middle Gate closes the vista along that path.
Traditional form, lively carving
The brackets are three-bearing blocks and the gable has a rainbow beam with a frog-leg strut, which the official description reads as following older precedent. It then praises the carving on the beams and strut as lively and full of volume, expressing the sensibility of its time. Where the carving of the South Mizugaki Gate is called restrained but thick, here the forms themselves swell and curl.
The roof differs too. The Kojumon, Kofukumon and Mizugaki gates in the sanctuary all have copper roofs; the Sumiyoshi Taisha South Middle Gate carries heavy clay tiles over a 5.3-metre span. Its status as the largest gate is easy to believe once you see that weight. The Agency calls it the core of the historic landscape along the southern edge.
Built in the late Edo period, it was moved to its present site in 1963, the same year as the two Mizugaki gates, which suggests a rearrangement of the gates between the sanctuary and the southern edge at that time. The published sources do not say where it stood before.
What to look for, and visiting
Enter by the South Gate and walk past the stone stage, and the South Middle Gate comes into view ahead. Look at how far the carving spreads on either side of the frog-leg strut and at the size of the scrolls on the beam. Up close you also see the thickness of the tiled eaves.
The Sumiyoshi Taisha South Middle Gate stands on the southern path and can be seen freely during opening hours, free of charge. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
