The plain-wood gate of the Shinkan zone

Sumiyoshi Taisha Shinkan West Gate (住吉大社神館西門, Shinkan Nishimon) is a four-legged gate built in 1828 at the centre of the front of the Shinkan zone of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved here in the mid-Meiji period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It has a gabled roof of clay tiles and is 4.5 metres wide.

The Shinkan zone lies south of the main sanctuary and is built around the Shinkan Hall, erected in 1915 to mark the Taisho Emperor's enthronement. This gate is the formal entrance to that zone on its west side.

The same scheme as the Kojumon

The brackets are three-bearing blocks with sub-brackets, the gable has a rainbow beam with a frog-leg strut, and between the lintel and the ridge beam there is a second rainbow beam with a frog-leg strut and a vase-shaped strut. That is exactly the arrangement of the Kojumon, the front gate of the main sanctuary. The official description notes that, though unpainted, the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shinkan West Gate shares the Kojumon's form, and that its carving is flowing and refined, giving it the dignity of a front gate.

The differences are in finish and roof. The Kojumon is roofed in copper; this gate carries clay tiles, and its timber is left bare so the colour of the wood shows. The same skeleton is used for both, while the materials set the two zones apart.

The year 1828 is eighteen years after the main halls were rebuilt in 1810, and the Tachigikisha Main Hall and the Saikan Hall in the grounds share the same date. The gate was moved here in the mid-Meiji period; its earlier location is not given in the published sources.

What to look for, and visiting

Compare the three-layer arrangement over the doors with the Kojumon's. On unpainted timber the shadows of the carving look softer, and the scrolls run long and thin, which is what the Agency means by flowing.

The exterior of the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shinkan West Gate can be seen from the path during opening hours, free of charge. The Shinkan Hall is used for ceremonies such as the Setsubun archery rite, and whether the zone behind the gate is open depends on events and season, so follow on-site signs. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
