A small water shrine behind the main halls
Sumiyoshi Taisha Kifunesha Main Hall (住吉大社末社貴船社本殿) is a late Edo-period sanctuary standing beside the Tachigikisha behind the main sanctuary of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, moved to its present site in the mid-Showa period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It is one bay square, entered from the gable end, with a tiled roof and a floor area of 3.0 square metres.
It enshrines Takaokami, a god of water and rain, as a branch of Kifune Shrine in Kyoto. Water and the sea are everywhere at Sumiyoshi, from Tatsusha to Daikai Shrine, and Kifunesha belongs to that family. Its festival is on June 1.
Same form as its neighbour, different details
Short wing walls flank the front of the outer room, and the division between outer and inner rooms uses a rainbow beam rather than horizontal tie-boards, with a board door fitted into it. The official description says the Sumiyoshi Taisha Kifunesha Main Hall matches the neighbouring Tachigikisha Main Hall in size and form but differs in detail, showing how varied the detailing of Sumiyoshi-derived sanctuaries can be.
At Tachigikisha the posts carry the beams directly and the chamfered square posts stand on sills with the floor raised high. Here the features are the wing walls and the beam-and-door division. Two tiny shrines side by side give two different answers within the same one-bay frame, and as you walk round the small shrines, that pattern of same form, different detail keeps recurring.
Built in the late Edo period, it was moved to its present site in the mid-Showa period. Many of Sumiyoshi's subsidiary shrines have moved since the Edo period, and this is one of them.
What to look for, and visiting
The Sumiyoshi Taisha Kifunesha Main Hall is on the path that runs behind the main halls on the east side. Compare it with the Tachigikisha next door: the wing walls and the way the inner partition is framed are the differences to look for. Both cover just 3.0 square metres, so step close.
The exterior can be seen during opening hours, at no charge. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
