Guardian of the ground itself

Sumiyoshi Taisha Godosha Main Hall (住吉大社末社后土社本殿) is one of a cluster of small branch shrines deep in the garden at the rear of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, built in the late Edo period, moved to its present site in the mid-Showa period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10. It is one bay square, entered from the gable end, with a roof of pan tiles and a floor area of 3.0 square metres. The name is read Godo-sha.

It enshrines Tsuchi-no-mioya, the god of the land who protects the whole precinct. According to the shrine, a sacred tree once stood here, and leftover offerings and ritual vessels that had to be disposed of were laid to rest beneath it. In other words, this was where the shrine's daily rituals ended. Its festival is on October 19.

The standard small-shrine version of Sumiyoshi style

Crossed struts in the gable, a gently curved roof and an outer room raised on sills and treated as a shop-shelf front: these are the features shared by the small branch shrines modelled on Sumiyoshi-zukuri. The official description groups the Sumiyoshi Taisha Godosha Main Hall with Tachigikisha and Kifunesha as evidence of how varied the Sumiyoshi-derived sanctuaries are.

The roof, though, is of pan tiles rather than the traditional round-and-flat tiles. A pan tile does both jobs in a single piece, a later development that gives a lighter roof, and among small shrines mostly roofed in traditional tile this one looks different. The curve of the roof is also softer than the dead-straight roofs of the main halls.

The cluster in the garden includes newer buildings such as the Gosha Main Hall of 1964. Godosha, built in the late Edo period, belongs to the older generation within the group.

What to look for, and visiting

The Sumiyoshi Taisha Godosha Main Hall is in the northeast of the grounds, among the small shrines at the back of the garden, near the Gosha Main Hall. Look at the pan-tiled, curved roof and the raised outer room. Few visitors come this far, so it is a quiet place to look at the small shrines.

The exterior can be seen during opening hours, at no charge. Opening hours and directions are on the Sumiyoshi Taisha page.
