What the Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall Is

The Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall (感田神社参集殿, Kanda Jinja Sanshuden) is a building of formal reception rooms at Kanda Shrine in Naka, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, built in 1882, moved to its present site in 1924, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 October 2008. It stretches east to west along the northern edge of the grounds.

It is a single-storey timber building with a building area of 214 square metres, far larger than anything else among the twelve registrations and more than five times the 38 square metres of the Shinmon gate, the next largest. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives its address as 1546-2 Naka and other lots, the plots on the north side of the grounds.

Neither the Agency nor the city says where it stood before it was moved.

Why It Was Registered

The Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall was registered as a building that serves as a model of form. The Agency describes its rooms as finely made.

The principal room is at the east end: twelve and a half tatami mats, with a tokonoma alcove, staggered shelves and a flat shoin window. A second room of the same size follows to the west, and a veranda runs around them. Kaizuka City adds that the main room has an alcove two bays wide and Nageshi rails running round all four walls, formal touches that keep the Edo-period manner in a Meiji building.

The shrine's website says the hall can be used for wedding receptions, so these Meiji rooms are still a place where people gather.

What to Look For: A Roof That Changes Shape

The roof of the Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall is of round-and-flat tiles throughout, but it changes form halfway. The eastern half is hipped-and-gabled Irimoya-zukuri, the higher-ranking form, placed over the principal room; the western half is a plain Kirizuma-zukuri gable.

A little east of centre, a Shikidai, a formal entrance for receiving guests, projects under its own hipped-and-gabled roof. From it the route leads east to the principal room, and you can read that route from the roofs alone.

Stand in the southern part of the grounds and face north. The hipped end on the right, the entrance roof in the middle and the plain gable on the left line up along one long ridge, and together they show from outside how rank is laid out inside.

Visiting the Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall

The Kanda Shrine Assembly Hall is used for shrine functions and wedding receptions, and no public opening of its rooms is advertised. The exterior can be seen from the grounds (checked 26 September 2026).
