What the Kanda Shrine Shinmon Gate Is

The Kanda Shrine Shinmon Gate (感田神社神門, Kanda Jinja Shinmon) is a two-storey gate built in 1780 at Kanda Shrine in Naka, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 October 2008. It stands on the west side of the shrine, set back a few steps from a north-south street, and closes the end of the short approach that runs in from that street.

The gate is three bays wide with a single passage through the middle bay, and has a hipped-and-gabled Irimoya-zukuri roof in full round-and-flat tiles. It covers 38 square metres. A gate with a full upper storey like this is called a romon, and Kaizuka City describes the Shinmon as one of very few shrine gates of this type in Osaka Prefecture.

When Osaka Prefecture surveyed its early modern shrine and temple buildings, the Shinmon was measured in detail, and the survey established that a carpenter named Tanegashima Kanzaemon was among those who built it. Of the twelve registered buildings at Kanda Shrine, it is the only one for which the city names a builder.

Why It Was Registered

The Kanda Shrine Shinmon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the way the two storeys use different bracketing and different eaves, and to the shaped openings in the side bays and upper storey, calling the composition distinctive.

Earthen walls run from both sides of the gate out to the street, so gate and walls read as one frontage. The Agency's entry for the wall says the same thing from the other direction: together with the Shinmon, it gives the front of the compound its dignity.

In 1780 the rites at Kanda Shrine were still led by the priest of its Buddhist temple, Sofukuji. The cusped Katōmado windows in the lower side bays are a form more often met on temple buildings.

What to Look For

Start low. The lower storey has plain bracket-and-bolster supports, with the beams pushed out to carry the eaves in the Degeta-zukuri manner, and a single layer of closely set parallel rafters. Then look up. The upper storey switches to three-block bracket sets and a double layer of fan rafters, which spread out toward the corners like the ribs of a folding fan.

You will not see the change from directly under the gate. Walk back a few paces toward the street and look up; the two sets of eaves separate clearly from there.

Guard railings stand in the lower side bays, with the cusped windows behind them. The upper openings are cut in the outline of a koza-ma, the scalloped panel normally carved on the sides of an altar platform, borrowed here for a window.

Visiting the Kanda Shrine Shinmon Gate

The Kanda Shrine Shinmon Gate is the entrance from the western street, and you can walk through it into the grounds. The exterior can be seen from both the approach and the grounds, but there is no indication that the upper storey is ever opened (checked 26 September 2026).
