What the Kanda Shrine South Gate Is

The Kanda Shrine South Gate (感田神社南門, Kanda Jinja Minamimon) is a Kōraimon-type gate built in 1889 at Kanda Shrine in Naka, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 October 2008. It stands near the middle of the southern edge of the grounds, facing the road on that side.

It has a single passage but is unusually wide for that, with a frontage of 4.1 metres. The roof is a simple gable in full round-and-flat tiles, and short side walls extend to left and right. The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists it as one structure: wooden, tiled, 4.1 metres wide, with side walls.

The shrine lies just north of Kaizuka Station, so for anyone arriving on foot from the station the Kanda Shrine South Gate is often the first way in. The sacred horse stable of 1758 stands immediately to its east.

Why It Was Registered

The Kanda Shrine South Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it, with the walls beside it, as forming the streetscape along the south side of the compound.

If the two-storey Shinmon on the western street is the formal front door, the South Gate is the face the shrine turns toward the town. Where the Shinmon is ornate, this one is plain and heavy-timbered, and it anchors the view along the southern road.

What to Look For

What makes the Kanda Shrine South Gate worth a close look is how it carries its roof. The main posts, rectangular in section, stand on cut-stone bases and are tied together near the top by a lintel. Above that, heavy cantilever beams run out front and back, propped on bracket arms and bearing blocks, and push the eave purlins well out beyond the posts.

Stand to one side of the gate and you can see how far the eaves reach past the line of the posts. Because the cantilevers throw the roof so far forward, the 4.1-metre opening sits in deep shade even on a bright day.

The rafters are widely spaced, in a single layer. Compare them with the tightly packed rafters of the Shinmon and you see how differently two gates in the same compound were built, about a century apart.

Visiting the Kanda Shrine South Gate

The Kanda Shrine South Gate is an everyday entrance from the southern road, and you can walk through it. Both faces can be seen from the road and from the grounds; no special opening is advertised (checked 26 September 2026).
