What the Yonnosha Main Hall Is

The Kanda Shrine Subordinate Shrine Yonnosha Main Hall (感田神社末社四之社本殿, Kanda Jinja Massha Yonnosha Honden) is a miniature shrine hall built in 1860 at Kanda Shrine in Naka, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 October 2008. Kaizuka City identifies it as the hall of the Sumiyoshi shrine.

It stands inside the shared shelter of three small shrines, just east of the central Sannosha hall. With a building area of only 0.49 square metres it is the smallest of the twelve registered buildings. It is a one-bay Nagare-zukuri shrine roofed in cypress bark.

Why It Was Registered

The Kanda Shrine Subordinate Shrine Yonnosha Main Hall was registered as a building that serves as a model of form. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes its details as fitting for its period.

According to the Agency, a railed veranda wraps three sides of the body of the shrine, with a low deck at the front. The columns are round, with simple bracket-and-bolster tops, and the gables use a Kōryō tie beam with a Taiheizuka strut. Only the front eave has a double layer of rafters, giving the face of the shrine a step up in rank.

The roofed porch that projects toward the worshipper is called a Kōhai. Here it is carried on bracket sets with three bearing blocks in a row, and between the posts sits a carved panel with a pine and other motifs.

What to Look For

Look closely at the roof of the Kanda Shrine Subordinate Shrine Yonnosha Main Hall and you can pick out each course of bark. The Agency notes that it is laid with a wide exposure, meaning each layer shows a broad band. The result is chunkier than the fine, tightly layered bark of a large temple roof.

Then find the pine carving in the middle of the porch. The Gonosha hall immediately west is the same size and form, and the Agency says only the porch carvings differ, so looking at the two side by side is the best way to see what makes this one distinct.

Visiting the Yonnosha Main Hall

The Kanda Shrine Subordinate Shrine Yonnosha Main Hall is inside its shelter and is seen from the front of the shelter. It is so small that the carvings are hard to make out unless you are close. There is no entry and no advertised special opening (checked 26 September 2026).
