About the Kotani Family Residence Main Gate
The Kotani Family Residence Main Gate (小谷家住宅正門, Kotani-ke Jūtaku Seimon) is a Nagayamon, a gatehouse with rooms built into it, in Toyoda, Minami-ku, Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, built in the mid-Meiji era (1883 to 1897) and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2013. It stands on the west side of the estate with its ridge running north to south. The single-story timber structure covers 68 square meters, and the national record notes that it comes with an attached corridor and wall.
From the road, a stone-paved ramp climbs from the entrance in an S-curve, and the main gate waits at the top. It is the first building that visitors to the Kotani Family Residence face head-on, the formal front of the estate.
A Hip-and-Gable Gatehouse
The roof of the Kotani Family Residence Main Gate is hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) and laid with traditional round-and-flat tiles (Hongawarabuki). The estate's south gate, by contrast, has a plain gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri), so the two gates differ in roof form.
The passage opens slightly south of center. Board doors hang from the main posts (Kagami-bashira), and small wicket doors (Kugurido) on either side let people come and go without swinging open the large leaves. South of the passage is a five-mat room fitted with a lookout lattice (Monomi-gōshi) for watching the outside. To the north are two more rooms, and the northernmost is covered by a separate, lower roof (Ochimune).
The walls are finished in white lime plaster (Shikkui), with the lower part clad in horizontal boards held by notched battens, a kind of Shitami-itabari called sasarako. The Agency for Cultural Affairs says this combination gives the gate a stern air. According to Sakai City, the main timbers are Keyaki (zelkova).
Why It Was Registered
The Kotani Family Residence Main Gate was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. Sakai City points to the main gate in particular: together with the steep stone-paved ramp and the plastered earthen wall, it recalls the approach to a mountain castle. That impression fits the history of the site, since the estate occupies the southwest corner of the former Kotani Castle.
Look at how the roof steps down. Against the full hip-and-gable roof, the lower roof over the northern end gives the long building a break in height. From the foot of the ramp, both that step and the horizontal line of the dark boarding under the white plaster are easy to pick out.
Seeing the Main Gate
The Kotani Family Residence Main Gate can be viewed from outside only. The interior of the estate is closed to the public, so you cannot walk through the gate. Because it sits at the top of the ramp on the west side, the usual view is from the road on the west, looking up past the stone paving.
