About the Kotani Family Residence South Gate
The Kotani Family Residence South Gate (小谷家住宅南門, Kotani-ke Jūtaku Minamimon) is a Nagayamon, a gatehouse with rooms built into it, in Toyoda, Minami-ku, Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, built in the mid-Meiji era (1883 to 1897) and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2013. It runs along the southern edge of the estate facing south, with a storehouse joined to its east end. The single-story timber building covers 108 square meters.
The Kotani Family Residence has two gatehouses, the main gate on the west and this one on the south, and the south gate is the larger of the two (the main gate covers 68 square meters). The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes its appearance as massive, like a castle gate.
Gabled Roof, Warrior Windows
The Kotani Family Residence South Gate has a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) laid with traditional round-and-flat tiles (Hongawarabuki). Its passage is pushed to the far east end, with a board door flanked on both sides by wicket doors (Kugurido). Three rooms run in a row to the west of the passage, and the storehouse abuts it on the east, so gate, rooms and storehouse read as one long building.
The walls are white lime plaster (Shikkui) above a base of vertical boards. The main gate uses horizontal boarding instead, so the two gates on the same estate are finished differently. At key points along the wall are lookout lattices (Monomi-gōshi) and Musha-mado, windows filled with thick vertical bars of the kind found in castle barracks and samurai row houses.
Sakai City notes that, as with the main gate, the principal timbers are Keyaki (zelkova).
Why It Was Registered
The Kotani Family Residence South Gate was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The white plaster wall studded with lattices and barred windows gives the southern side of the estate a guarded, defensive face, which is what the national description has in mind when it likens the building to a castle gate.
The thing to notice is the long wall. Because the passage is set at the east end, the wall to the west continues unbroken for the length of three rooms, punctuated only by the windows. Take in the storehouse at the east end as well, and the building reads less as a gate than as a row house marking off the south edge of the estate.
Seeing the South Gate
The Kotani Family Residence South Gate can be viewed from outside only. The estate interior is closed to the public, and you cannot pass through the gate. Since it lines the southern edge of the plot, the view is from the south side of the estate, along the wall and its row of windows.
