About the Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall
The Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall (小谷家住宅土塀, Kotani-ke Jūtaku Dobei) is a tiled earthen wall in Toyoda, Minami-ku, Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, built in the mid-Meiji era (1883 to 1897) and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2013. It runs a total of 132 meters in two stretches: one along the road on the west side of the estate, and one lining the stone-paved ramp that climbs from the entrance to the main gate.
That ramp rises in an S-curve, and the wall bends with it. A wall that climbs and turns with the path, rather than running straight, is what sets the Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall apart.
Cobblestone Base, Timber Section
The Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall stands on a base of stacked rounded cobbles capped with flat laid stones, and the earthen wall is built on top of that. It is roofed with pantiles (Sangawara-buki); the national database lists the roofing as tile and copper sheeting. Sakai City describes the walls as lime plaster (Shikkui), so a white band runs above the paving and stonework.
Not all 132 meters are earth. On the north face of the ramp the wall switches to timber construction with exposed posts (Shinkabe). So even along the same ramp, solid plastered earth and a visible wooden frame are used on different faces.
Why It Was Registered
The Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with lending dignity to the approach to the estate. Sakai City likewise says that the main gate, together with the steep stone ramp and the plastered wall, evokes a mountain castle, so the wall and the gate work as a pair in shaping the first impression of the estate.
The places to watch are the turns, where the wall changes direction to follow the curve of the ramp. From below, the white wall and its line of tiles curve upward until the main gate comes into view at the top. Compare the straight run along the road with the curved run beside the ramp, and the two sections clearly do different jobs.
Seeing the Earthen Wall
Of all the registered structures, the Kotani Family Residence Earthen Wall is the one you can see most closely from the road. The estate interior is closed, though, and Sakai City asks for exterior viewing only. Do not touch the wall or climb on the stonework; view it from the road on the west.
