About the Kotani Family Residence Main House

The Kotani Family Residence Main House (小谷家住宅主屋, Kotani-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a large farmhouse-style dwelling in Toyoda, Minami-ku, Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, built in the mid-Edo period (1661 to 1751) and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2013. A ridge tag (Munafuda) records that it was remodeled into its present form in 1809, and Sakai City describes it as one of the few large mid-Edo houses left anywhere in the city.

The house stands in the center of the estate, facing south. It is a single-story timber building with a footprint of 469 square meters, more than two and a half times the combined area of the estate's main gate (68 square meters) and south gate (108 square meters). Of the four registered structures at the Kotani Family Residence, it is the only one that goes back to the Edo period.

A Yamatomune Roof and a Long Floor Plan

What gives the main house its outline is a roof type called Yamatomune. Here the main roof is a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) form laid with pantiles (Sangawara-buki); the national database records the covering as tile with some copper sheeting. Sakai City explains that the ridge over the wide earthen-floored work area (Doma) on the east side is set one step lower, so the change in roof height signals the change in use below.

The plan runs east to west. The doma fills the east end, and a long sequence of raised, floored rooms extends west from it. Toward the west is a formal entrance with a Shikidai, a low boarding step reserved for guests of rank, leading to high-grade reception rooms. The innermost formal room sits in the northwest corner. Guests entered and were received on the west; daily work happened on the east. That division suits a family who served as village headmen of Toyoda in the Edo period.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the framing as heavy and the finish work as of high quality.

Why It Was Registered

The Kotani Family Residence Main House was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. Both the national description and Sakai City single out its rarity: large houses dating back to the mid-Edo period are scarce within Sakai. The gates and wall added in the Meiji era were arranged around it, so the whole estate is organized with this building at its core.

The feature to look for is the stepped roofline. A yamatomune roof pairs a steep main roof with lower roofs set against it, and on this long east-west building the drop over the doma breaks up what would otherwise be a single mass. The profile you see today is the one fixed by the 1809 remodeling recorded on the ridge tag.

Seeing the Main House

The interior of the Kotani Family Residence Main House is closed to the public, and Sakai City asks visitors to view it from outside only. Because the house sits in the middle of the plot behind the two gates, what you can see from the road is mostly its roof above the gates and walls. For the stepped roofline, try the south side or the foot of the sloping approach on the west.

You cannot pass through the gates. There is no official statement on photography, but as this is a private estate that does not open its interior, keep to photographing the roof from the public road. Directions to the estate are on the Kotani Family Residence page.
