About the Minami Family Residence Earthen Wall
The Minami Family Residence Earthen Wall (南家住宅土塀, Minami-ke Jūtaku Dobei) is a tile-capped clay wall at a former village-headman estate in Jinenda, Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture, built in the early Meiji era and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It runs 77 meters in total, in two sections. About 50 meters follows the southern edge of the property westward from the forecourt of the front gate. The other 25 meters or so stands inside the estate, along the southern part of the boundary between the farm yard and the garden. The wall straddles two lots, 1706 and 1708.
Why the Earthen Wall Was Registered
The Minami Family Residence Earthen Wall was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, together with the front gate and the Tatsumi Storehouse, it forms the historic streetscape of this block.
If the gate and the storehouse are points, the wall is a line. Running 50 meters along the southern road, it makes the extent of the estate visible.
What to Look For
The wall is built up in clay on a base of laid stone and capped with a small pantiled roof. That cap is what keeps rain off the clay, which would otherwise wash away.
The inner section, about 25 meters long, separates the working yard from the garden in front of the reception rooms. Facing outward, the wall shows the edge of the estate; facing inward, it divides the place for work from the place for looking.
Visiting the Earthen Wall
The southern section of the Minami Family Residence Earthen Wall, about 50 meters, runs along the road and can be seen from the street. Walking west from the forecourt of the front gate gives the best sense of its length.
The inner section is on private land and cannot be seen. Please do not touch or lean on the wall; view it from the road.
