About the Minami Family Residence Barn
The Minami Family Residence Barn (南家住宅納屋, Minami-ke Jūtaku Naya) is a single-story timber work shed at a former village-headman estate in Jinenda, Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture, built toward the end of the Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It stands on the west side of the property in the kaito, the open farm yard. It measures three bays by two, with a building area of 28 square meters. Its lot number is 1707, separate from lot 1706 where the main house and storehouses stand.
A Shed That Keeps the Farm Yard Legible
The Minami Family Residence Barn was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a work shed that preserves a sense of how the kaito once looked.
Hannan City explains that yards like this were multipurpose work spaces typical of prosperous farms around Osaka, and that most have been lost to development. Here both the yard and the shed used in it survive, and that pairing is what gives the barn its value: it shows how a farming household actually worked.
What to Look For
The gabled roof is covered in hongawara tiles. On the west side a half-bay lean-to roof sweeps down and wraps around onto the south side, creating a sheltered strip where work could go on out of the rain.
Inside, the barn is divided into two rooms, north and south, with the northern one floored in earth.
For a work shed, the heavy hongawara roof is a notable expense. The same standard of building that shaped the main house and storehouses reached all the way out to the farm yard.
Visiting the Barn
The Minami Family Residence Barn is on the far west side of the estate and is difficult to see from any road. It is on private land and is not open.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs database and the Hannan City page describe the barn and its yard.
