About the Minami Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse
The Minami Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse (南家住宅辰巳蔵, Minami-ke Jūtaku Tatsumigura) is a two-story earthen storehouse at a former village-headman estate in Jinenda, Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture, built around 1921 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It stands southeast of the main house with its ridge running north to south. It measures seven bays by three and a half, with a building area of 78 square meters. That makes it by far the largest of the three storehouses on the estate, more than three times the size of the Inner Storehouse (22 square meters) at the back.
A Rice Store from the Brewing Years
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Minami family ran a sake brewery for a time, and during that period the Tatsumi Storehouse held rice. Brewing sake takes large quantities of rice, which likely explains the size of the building.
It was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape. With roads on two sides, east and south, it is a sizable storehouse that defines the southeast corner of the Minami Family Residence.
What to Look For
The gabled roof is covered in pantiles, with the eaves finished in copper sheet. The front gate uses the same copper-edged eaves, so the gate and the storehouse along the street share a finish.
There are two doorways, one on the west wall facing into the estate and one on the south wall facing the road.
Tatsumi is the old zodiac name for the southeast, and the storehouse most likely takes its name from its position: the southeast corner of the property, seen from the main house.
Visiting the Tatsumi Storehouse
Because it stands right on the road, the Minami Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse is the easiest of the seven structures to see. With its ridge running north to south, you see its long side from the road on the east and its gable end from the road on the south.
The interior is not open. The streets here are residential, so please do not block traffic while you look.
