About the Minami Family Residence Outer Storehouse
The Minami Family Residence Outer Storehouse (南家住宅外蔵, Minami-ke Jūtaku Sotogura) is a two-story earthen storehouse at a former village-headman estate in Jinenda, Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture, built toward the end of the Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It stands north of the kitchen wing of the main house, with its ridge running east to west. It measures three bays by two and covers 26 square meters. The roof is of the okiyane type, gabled and covered in pantiles, with the entrance on the long side.
A Storehouse Tied to the Kitchen
The Minami Family Residence Outer Storehouse was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape.
What sets it apart is its link to daily life. The doorway opens at the east end of the south wall, and between it and the kitchen wing is a kuramae, a working space in front of a storehouse entrance where goods are brought in and out. A storehouse set just behind the kitchen, with that space between, shows plainly how food and household goods moved around the house.
What to Look For
The walls are clad in vertical boards on the lower part and plastered above, and a hachimaki runs around the top of the wall. This is a thickened band of plaster just under the eaves, where fire is most likely to catch.
The Inner Storehouse on the same estate also has an okiyane roof, but in hongawara tiles; the Minami Family Residence Outer Storehouse uses pantiles instead. The difference in finish may reflect the gap in date between the late Edo Inner Storehouse and this one.
Visiting the Outer Storehouse
The Minami Family Residence Outer Storehouse is behind the main house, north of the kitchen wing, and cannot really be seen from the road. It is part of a private home and is not open to the public.
From outside the estate there is no view of the north side where it stands.
