The Family's Principal Storehouse
Tsuji Family Residence Main Storehouse (辻家住宅本蔵, Tsuji-ke Jūtaku Honkura) is a 2-storey earthen storehouse built in 1870 on the Tsuji estate in Ikenohara, Osakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 2006. Together with the rice storehouse, it is the oldest of the estate's seven registered structures.
Built in the dozo-zukuri manner, with thick clay walls over a timber frame, it covers 14 square metres. It stands behind the main house on the northern edge of the lot, its ridge running north to south under a roof of heavy hongawarabuki tile.
Why It Was Registered
The Tsuji Family Residence Main Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it defines the northern edge of the estate and calls its workmanship careful throughout.
That care shows in the walls. They are finished in white shikkui plaster carried right up under the eaves, sealing the soffits so fire cannot creep in beneath the roof. The full plaster wrap also gives the building a crisp outline. Vertical boards cover the lower walls to roughly the height of the ground floor, shielding the plaster from rain splash.
A doorway in the south gable end of the ground floor connects to the main house through a corridor, so the family could reach its most valuable goods without stepping outside. The name honkura, main storehouse, suggests this is where the household kept what mattered most.
What to Look For
The gable end is the face to study. There is a window with its own small hood on each floor, one above the other, and the pair of hoods on the white wall stretches the proportions of the 2-storey building upward.
The high wall along the west side of the estate turns at the northern boundary and ends against the Tsuji Family Residence Main Storehouse. The corner where wall roof meets storehouse gable marks the point where the compound's outer boundary closes.
Visiting the Main Storehouse
The Tsuji Family Residence Main Storehouse stands inside a private home. It is not open, and the grounds cannot be entered.
From the rice fields north of the compound, the storehouse appears as one of the row of buildings in front of the thatched main house. Take photographs from the public road and respect the residents' privacy.
