A Small Room Between Two Storehouses
Tsuji Family Residence Living Room (辻家住宅居間, Tsuji-ke Jūtaku Ima) is a late-Meiji single-storey room wing on the Tsuji estate in Ikenohara, Osakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 2006. A timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of just 14 square metres, it ties with the main storehouse as the smallest of the estate's registered buildings.
It sits on the northern edge of the lot, pressed between the rice storehouse on the east and the main storehouse on the west. That position defines it. Inside, the floor is laid with tatami, and the room served as a family living space.
Why It Was Registered
The Tsuji Family Residence Living Room was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as completing the back of the estate together with the two storehouses, treating the three buildings on the northern edge as a set rather than judging this one alone.
The walls are shinkabe, with posts left exposed, and the roof is a simple gable in sangawara pantiles, pitched lower than the heavy tiled roofs of the storehouses beside it. Light timber walls stand next to thick clay ones, so the difference between a room for living and a room for storing is visible from outside.
What to Look For
There is a doorway on the south side and a long horizontal window on the north, with vertical boards covering the lower wall. The north window looks straight out over the fields.
Seen from the north, the Tsuji Family Residence Living Room is the low roof that dips between two white storehouses. Built in the later Meiji years, after both storehouses, it fills the gap between them, and its lower height makes that sequence easy to read.
