A 42-Metre Wall Along the West Side
Tsuji Family Residence High Wall (辻家住宅高塀, Tsuji-ke Jūtaku Takabei) is a Meiji-era boundary wall enclosing the west side of the Tsuji estate in Ikenohara, Osakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 2006. Built of timber with a tiled coping, it runs about 42 metres including its turn.
It leaves the west gable of the gatehouse on the southern edge, runs north, then bends at the northern boundary to meet the main storehouse. By tying those two buildings together, it closes the west side and the northwest corner of the compound.
Why It Was Registered
The Tsuji Family Residence High Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with defining the western boundary and with giving the street a handsome edge. Along with the gatehouse, it is what passers-by see of the estate.
The wall stands on a precisely fitted base of cut stone. Above that, the shinkabe timber frame is finished in white shikkui plaster, the lower part is sheathed in vertical boards, and a roof of sangawara pantiles runs along the top. Carrying one consistent specification, stone to tile, across more than 40 metres is what gives the wall its standing.

On the Tsuji Family Residence High Wall, look at the tiles. The round eave tiles and the corner end tiles carry the Tsuji family crest, a pair of oak leaves known as daki-gashiwa. They sit exactly where someone on the road would glance up, so the wall works as the family's nameplate.
At the northwest corner, a decorative tile in the shape of Hotei, the pot-bellied god of good fortune, sits on the roof. The corner is the most visible point from a distance, and it is a natural place for a lucky charm.
Don't miss the base either. The neat, continuous joints of the cut stone show how carefully the footing was laid.
