The Front Face of the Estate
Tsuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (辻家住宅長屋門, Tsuji-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a Meiji-era gatehouse on the southern edge of the Tsuji estate in Ikenohara, Osakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 2006. It is a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of 48 square metres.
A nagayamon is a gate built into a long range of rooms, a form used by samurai households and prosperous farmers in the Edo period to announce their status to the road. The Tsuji gatehouse runs east to west, with the passage set a little east of centre. East of the passage is an attendants' room; west of it is a barn.
Why It Was Registered
Like its six neighbours, the Tsuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The official description credits it with giving the estate a dignified public face.
Look at the roofs and the reasoning becomes clear. The passage and attendants' room sit under a hipped-and-gabled irimoya roof of heavy hongawarabuki tile. The barn to the west has a plain gabled roof in lighter sangawara pantiles. The prestigious tile goes over the gate; the practical tile goes over the storage. From the road you can read which part is ceremonial and which part is for work.
The walls are white shikkui plaster above dark weatherboard, and the barn has a small pent roof. The passage holds a pair of large doors with a small wicket door cut into them.
What to Look For
On the Tsuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate, notice the rooflines. The barn's gabled roof sits a step higher than the irimoya roof over the gate, which reverses the usual arrangement in which the gate is the tallest point.
With the gate shut, the long band of white plaster and dark boards reads almost as a wall. With it open, you glimpse the trimmed trees of the front garden and the entrance of the main house beyond.
From the gatehouse's west gable, a high wall about 42 metres long heads north. Together, the gate and the wall draw the southern and western outline of the whole compound.
Visiting the Gatehouse
The Tsuji Family Residence is a private home. You cannot pass through the gate, and the attendants' room and barn are not open.
Of the seven registered structures, the Tsuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate is the easiest to see: it faces the public road on the south side of the estate. The gate is the family's front door, so keep stops short and take photographs from the road.
