About the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse
The Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse (山本家住宅東土蔵, Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Higashi Dozō) is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri earthen-walled storehouse built in 1923 in Saidera 2-chome, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 5, 2019. It has a Sangawara-buki pantiled roof and a footprint of 39 square meters, and was renovated around 1972.
The Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse stands toward the north end of the east side of the plot, facing west. Suita City describes it as the storehouse in the northeast of the homestead; with the north storehouse and front gate along the north edge, it secures that corner of the property.
The Exterior
The storehouse is built with an Okiyane, a separate timber roof set over a clay-sealed body. A Hisashi lean-to projects at the southern end of the west face and a Geya lean-to on the north. The doorway is probably under the western lean-to, since that is the front, though the Agency for Cultural Affairs does not say where it is.
The walls are finished in white Shikkui plaster. Near the top run two bands of Hachimaki, thickened plaster mouldings under the eaves that cast two horizontal shadow lines, and the lower walls are clad in vertical boards, Tateita-bari, to shield the clay from splashing rain.
White wall between plaster bands above and boarding below: the north storehouse is finished the same way. Two storehouses built at about the same time share one design on the north and east sides of the homestead.
Inside, and Why It Was Registered
Both floors of the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse are single rooms. The walls are lined with metal sheeting, and the roof is carried on a Wagoya frame, the traditional Japanese arrangement of short posts standing on beams.
It was registered as contributing to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it as one corner of the homestead's northeastern scenery.
Visiting the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse
The Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse stands within a private homestead, and no opening of its interior has been announced. Please stay outside the property and photograph only from the public road.
Because the storehouse faces west, into the plot, its front lean-to is probably hard to see from outside. The north side with its lean-to and the banded plaster walls are the parts most likely to be visible.
