What Is the Nakanishi Family Residence Storehouse No. 2?

The Nakanishi Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 (中西家住宅土蔵二, Nakanishi-ke Jūtaku Dozō Ni) is a two-storey late Edo-period (1751–1829) storehouse in Kishibe-naka, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 July 2003. Of the pair of storehouses behind the main house, it is the one on the east.

The earthen-walled building has a tiled roof and a building area of 47 square metres, smaller than Storehouse No. 1 to its west, at 58 square metres.

Why It Was Registered, and Its History

The Nakanishi Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, like its neighbour, it is drawn joined to the main house on the old estate plan.

It too was moved north in the Meiji era. No extension is recorded for it, so it stands at its original size, detached from the house. Moved in the same period and in the same direction, the two storehouses ended up side by side along the north of the estate.

What to Look For: One Storehouse, Two Uses

What sets the Nakanishi Storehouse No. 2 apart is how its interior is used. A partition divides it into east and west rooms. In the west room the upper floor was taken out, leaving a double-height space that serves as a storeroom for the dwelling.

Storehouse No. 1 was absorbed into the living quarters as reception rooms; Storehouse No. 2 kept its storage role and gave half of itself to the household. The two buildings, moved at the same time, were fitted into daily life in different ways.

Visiting the Nakanishi Family Residence Storehouse No. 2

The Nakanishi Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 stands deep in the estate and is not visible from the street. It is not among the buildings Suita City presents to visitors, and since part of it serves a dwelling, it could not be confirmed that you can see it on opening days.

If you want to see it, check with the Former Nakanishi Residence when you book, and ask about photography too. Booking details and directions are on the Nakanishi Family Residence page.
