What Is the Nakanishi Family Residence Nagayamon Gate?
The Nakanishi Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (中西家住宅長屋門, Nakanishi-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a late Edo-period (1751–1829) gatehouse in Kishibe-naka, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 July 2003. It stands at the centre of the south front of the Nakanishi estate and is unusually long, 10 ken by 2.5 ken, or roughly 18 by 4.5 metres.
It is a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 159 square metres. A Nagayamon gathers a gateway and a row of rooms under one roof; on the estates of leading rural families, those rooms typically housed gatekeepers or servants or served for storage.
Why the Gate Was Registered
The Nakanishi Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, like every building on the estate except the main house. What the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out is the treatment of the approach: along the street runs a forecourt about 3 metres deep, sunk like a dry moat, which gives the gate a wide space in front of it.
The gate therefore does not sit on the street edge but one step back, and you take in its full length across that forecourt. With the inner storehouse to the east and the Kizara shed to the west, it forms the frontage that defines the estate.
What to Look For: the Corner and the Side Entrance
The detail to find on the Nakanishi nagayamon is its east end. The eastern gable turns a right angle to the north and joins the inner storehouse, and in that turned section is a side entrance. According to the Agency, this was the doorway used for everyday coming and going.
The central gateway served guests and formal business; the side entrance served the family and the people who worked for them. Two entrances of different rank sit within one building.
From the street you can follow the roofline as it bends at the east end and runs into the two-storey gable of the storehouse. To see the length of the gate and the corner together, stand toward the west side of the forecourt and look east.
Visiting the Nakanishi Family Residence Nagayamon Gate
Because the Nakanishi Family Residence Nagayamon Gate faces the street on the south, its exterior can be seen from the public road on any day. Entry to the grounds is on the reservation-only opening days: buildings and garden on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the garden alone on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Suita City does not say whether the rooms inside the gatehouse are included in tours, nor whether photography is permitted, so ask the guide on the day. Booking details and directions are on the Nakanishi Family Residence page.
