What Is the Nakanishi Family Residence Kizara Shed?

The Nakanishi Family Residence Kizara Shed (Barn) (中西家住宅キザラ小屋(納屋), Nakanishi-ke Jūtaku Kizara-goya) is a single-storey timber shed of the mid-Meiji era in Kishibe-naka, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 July 2003. Suita City's list writes the name as Kizara, glossed as a wood shed.

The Nakanishi Kizara shed runs east to west along the south boundary of the estate, west of the gatehouse. It has a pan-tile roof and a building area of 40 square metres, and it was built to hold long timbers, such as logs used in farm work.

Why the Shed Was Registered

The Nakanishi Family Residence Kizara Shed was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs counts it, with the gatehouse and the inner storehouse, as part of the front of the estate: a gate in the middle, a two-storey storehouse on the east, and this long, low shed on the west.

The Agency also notes that it stands in place of an earthen wall. Rather than building a separate wall on the boundary, the family used the back of the shed as the wall itself.

What to Look For: Two Different Faces

The Kizara shed looks completely different from each side. To the street on the south it presents a closed wall. The north side, facing into the estate, has no wall at all; it is open from end to end, so the stacked timber inside would have been in plain view.

The doors tell you what it was for. Double doors in the east gable face the gatehouse forecourt, so a long pole could be carried straight in or out. From the forecourt, look for where those doors sit.

Looking west from the gate, you can follow the lower roof of the shed as it continues the line of the gatehouse eaves along the western half of the frontage.

Visiting the Nakanishi Family Residence Kizara Shed

The south wall of the Nakanishi Family Residence Kizara Shed lines the street, so you can see it as a boundary wall from the public road at any time. The open north side and the east doors can be seen from inside the grounds on reservation-only opening days: buildings and garden on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the garden alone on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The city does not publish rules on photography, so ask the guide. Booking details and directions are on the Nakanishi Family Residence page.
