The Station's Office Building
The Former Saitama Prefectural Textile Industry Testing Station Chichibu Branch Main Building (旧埼玉県繊維工業試験場秩父支場本館) is a timber office building of 1930 in Kumaki-cho, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 12, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 373 square metres; registration number 11-0032.
An Ōya-Stone Skirt and an Outsized Porch
This was the station's administrative block, laid out with offices and meeting rooms (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a single-storey timber building with a hipped roof of pantiles, set at the front of the site with the factory building stretching away behind it to the east.
What catches the eye first is the entrance porch, strikingly large for the modest building it serves. Below the windows runs a skirting wall of Ōya stone, and above it a continuous band of tall, narrow windows. The Agency singles out the composition as a Frank Lloyd Wright-style exterior, unusual in a provincial government building of the period.
Saitama Prefecture also points to the stone cladding and the interior decoration. Its landscape survey sheet records that the building opened in 1930 as the Chichibu Industrial Testing Station, the branch's earlier name.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the main building as a model of design: a timber office of the early Showa period that borrows a Wright-like vocabulary of stone, strong horizontals and a projecting porch.
The factory building and warehouse were registered on the same day, so the station's office, workshop and store survive together, with this building as its public face.
What to Look For
Stand in front and the porch seems to push the whole building forward; step back and the weight of the porch plays against the lightness of the tall windows above the stone base.
Up close, the Ōya stone shows the pitted, speckled surface typical of this soft volcanic tuff, a clear contrast with the timber and tile above. The prefecture's survey sheet notes how well the stonework sits with the decorative details of the early Showa era.
Visiting
The main building is part of Chichibu Meisenkan, and the city presents it, with the factory building, as a survivor of the early Showa era. During opening hours you can walk up to the porch and study the exterior closely. Official information does not say which rooms inside are open to visitors.
