About Kagami Shrine Main Hall

Kagami Shrine Main Hall (鏡神社本殿, Kagami Jinja Honden) in Kagami, Ryuo Town, Shiga Prefecture, is a shrine sanctuary of the mid-Muromachi period (1393–1466), recorded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as an Important Cultural Property designated on August 2, 1901. It belongs to Kagami Shrine.

Kagami Shrine Main Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1901. Strictly, that is the date of its listing under the law that preceded the present Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties; when the current law took effect in 1950 the date was carried over. The Agency's database gives designation number 00198 and a quantity of 1 building.

How the Kagami Shrine Main Hall Is Built

The Agency describes Kagami Shrine Main Hall in three terms: a 3-bay Nagare-zukuri sanctuary, a 3-bay Kōhai porch, and a Kokerabuki roof.

A 3-bay shrine has three spaces between its front posts. In the nagare-zukuri style the front slope of the gabled roof is drawn out well beyond the rear one, so that it reaches over the steps and veranda; seen from the side, the roof sweeps much further forward than back. Here that extended slope covers a porch as wide as the whole front, also three bays.

The roof is laid with kokerabuki, thin shingles of split wood overlapped in many courses. Unlike tile or copper, the eaves show the built-up thickness of all those layers.

Dating and Significance

The Agency for Cultural Affairs places Kagami Shrine Main Hall in the mid-Muromachi period, which it expresses as 1393–1466. The Ryuo Town Tourism Association describes it instead as a building of the Nanboku-chō period, so the two sources differ. The Agency's database records no ridge tag or inscription fixing the construction year.

Kagami Shrine Main Hall is a medieval 3-bay nagare-zukuri sanctuary that has come down with its shingle roof, surviving in a settlement that grew up as a post town on the old highway.

What to Look For at Kagami Shrine Main Hall

Walk round to the side first and follow the roofline. The difference between the long front slope and the short rear one is the clearest sign of the nagare-zukuri form.

From the front you can count 4 porch posts framing 3 bays. Because the porch matches the width of the sanctuary, the facade reads as broad and low. On a damp day after rain the shingles darken and the layered edge of the eaves stands out well.
