An Open-Air Stage over the Rocks

The Tarobogu Aga Shrine Stage (太郎坊宮阿賀神社舞台) is an open-air stage built out from a rock ledge of 1880 in Owakicho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber structure with an area of 31 square metres, renovated in 1948; registration number 25-0426.

Built out from the Ledge

The Tarobogu Aga Shrine Stage is an open-air platform projecting from the south side of the rock ledge before the worship pavilion, a frame of 4 by 3 bays built out over the slope (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Six tiers of tie beams brace the posts, carrying the beams and girders.

The deck is of reinforced concrete, with railings topped by onion finials on the east, west and south (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that it forms the open space before the main hall and is the core of the distinctive scene of a shrine set on steep rock, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
