A Barn Built Like a Storehouse
The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn (藤田佳宏家住宅納屋) is a 2-storey barn of dozo-zukuri construction of the mid-Meiji period in the Honmachi district of Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 15, 2010 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a 2-storey earthen-walled building with a tile roof and a building area of 40 square metres; registration number 32-0106.
The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn stands behind the main house and is joined to the east side of the storehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
On the Same Stone Base as the Storehouse
The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building measuring 8.9 metres by 3.9 metres, with a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its depth of 3.9 metres matches the storehouse next door, while its length is 4 metres greater.
It stands on the same continuous base of uncut Nozurazumi stonework as the storehouse, and the lower walls of its east and north sides are clad in vertical boards (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Gotsu City Board of Education adds that a family crest decorates its upper part.
Why It Was Registered
Like the storehouse, the Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn is roofed with red Sekishū-gawara tiles. The Agency notes that it tidies the view from the back of the plot, and registered it for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
What to Look For
At the Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn, look for the vertical boarding (Tateita-bari) on the lower walls and the family crest set high on the building.
It shares its stone base, its red tiles and its depth with the storehouse beside it. Although it is called a barn, it is built with the thick earthen walls of a storehouse.
Visiting
The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Barn stands behind the main house, and no official information on interior access was found. It can only be seen from the public road; please do not enter the property.
