A Storehouse on a Stone Base

The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse (藤田佳宏家住宅土蔵) is a 2-storey storehouse of dozo-zukuri construction of the mid-Meiji period in the Honmachi district of Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 15, 2010 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a 2-storey earthen-walled building with a tile roof and a building area of 22 square metres; registration number 32-0105.

The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse stands in the southwest corner of the plot, linked to the main house by the privy wing that runs back from it (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

On a Rough Stone Base

The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building measuring 4.9 metres by 3.9 metres, with a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

At the back it stands on a retaining wall of uncut Nozurazumi stonework, and its ground floor is treated almost like a lean-to Geya (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The barn joins its east side and continues along the same stone base.

Why It Was Registered

The roof of the Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse is laid with red Sekishū-gawara tiles from the Iwami region. The Agency notes that the storehouse helps form a historic estate layout, and registered it for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

The Gotsu City Board of Education likewise points to its gabled roof of Sekishu tiles and to the rough stone base on which its back stands.

What to Look For

At the Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse, look at how the layers stack up: rough, unworked stones at the base, the earthen walls of the storehouse above them, and red Sekishu tiles on top.

The barn next door stands on the same stone base under the same red tiles, so the two buildings read as one continuous line at the back of the estate.

Visiting

The Fujita Yoshihiro Family Residence Storehouse stands at the back of the plot, in its southwest corner, and no official information on interior access was found. It can only be seen from the public road; please do not enter the property.
