About the Okuno Shogo Family Residence Rear Nagaya
The Okuno Shogo Family Residence Rear Nagaya (奥野省吾家住宅裏長屋, Okuno Shōgo-ke Jūtaku Ura-nagaya) is a single-story timber outbuilding in Mori, Hakuta-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, built in 1911 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005. It covers 44 square meters and runs along the eastern edge of the long, narrow plot.
A nagaya is a long, single-roofed building divided into several spaces. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Okuno Shogo rear nagaya for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that it is plainly built but gives order to the back of the estate. It went up in the same year as the main house and storehouse.
Passage, Room, Miso Store, Work Floor
The Okuno Shogo Family Residence Rear Nagaya lines up spaces of different uses in a single north-south range. Starting from the south, the Agency lists an open passage with a doorway, a board-floored room, an earth-floored miso store, and an open earth-floored area divided by partitions.
The open passage, not closed in by walls, probably served as a way through to the back of the property. With a room, a miso store and a work floor under one roof, the building gathered the behind-the-scenes jobs of the household.
Walls Left at the Middle Coat
The Okuno Shogo Family Residence Rear Nagaya is a single-story Shinkabe post-and-plaster building with a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantile (Sangawara-buki) roof running north to south. The walls are finished at the middle coat of plaster, without a top coat.
Next to the lattice bays of the main house and the lime plaster of the storehouse, the finish is modest. Moving from the street to the back of the estate, the buildings become plainer, and the rear nagaya sits at the practical, far end of that sequence.
