About the Okuno Shogo Family Residence Storehouse

The Okuno Shogo Family Residence Storehouse (奥野省吾家住宅土蔵, Okuno Shōgo-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is a two-story earthen storehouse in Mori, Hakuta-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, built in 1911 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005. It covers 22 square meters and stands behind the main house to the east.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Okuno Shogo storehouse as a model of form, describing it as carefully and solidly built throughout. It went up in 1911 together with the main house and the rear nagaya.

A Plaster Band and a Round Ridge-End

The Okuno Shogo Family Residence Storehouse is a two-story Dozo-zukuri building with a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantile (Sangawara-buki) roof running north to south. Its walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster, and a thick band called a hachimaki runs around the top of the walls, built up under the eaves for fire protection and giving the building a crisp outline.

On the gable ends, the end of the ridge beam is shaped into a circle. The treasure house of the Okuno Motoke Residence nearby has the same round ridge-end, which hints that this may have been a local habit among storehouse builders.

Stone Footings and a Floating Roof

The storehouse body rests on footings of dressed stone. The roof is an Okiyane, framed separately and set on top of the body, with deep eaves.

The door is in the south gable end, sheltered by a lean-to canopy. At only 22 square meters the Okuno Shogo storehouse is small, but its footings, walls and roof are all built to last, which is what the Agency means by solid.
