Carrying the Row Westward
Abuden Miso Middle Storehouse is a Meiji-period earthen-walled storehouse at 5-26 Kaemoncho, Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, listed on 17 February 2004 as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It has two storeys under a tiled roof, covers 41 square metres, and stands west of the east storehouse with its ridge running east to west.
Along the north side of the Abuden Miso plot the archive, east and middle storehouses stand in that order from the east. Abuden Miso Middle Storehouse is the westernmost of the three, and the row continues past it into the miso storehouse beyond.
The North Wall
The storehouse measures five bays along the ridge and two and a half across, gabled and tiled in pantiles, entered on the long side, with two floors. Like the east storehouse it carries a lean-to about two bays wide along the north.
The north wall is the point of the building. It is plastered over sasarago boarding, and it runs straight on into the lean-to wall of the miso storehouse to the west. With the east storehouse wall continuing into the outer wall to the east, the whole north side of the plot becomes an unbroken run of wall. The national record describes the result as a long brewery frontage along the north edge. Abuden Miso Middle Storehouse holds the middle stretch of it.
Sasarago boarding takes the battens that hold the weatherboards and notches them to sit against the overlaps, which keeps rain off the lower walls of a storehouse. White plaster above and boarding below give the north wall its texture.
Visiting
The building is private property on the premises of a working miso business and is not a visitor site. There are no opening hours or admission fee, and no official source publishes information about access to the interior.
