What Is the Gankaen Guesthouse (Former Shoin)?
The Gankaen Guesthouse (Former Shoin) (巖華園ゲストハウス（旧書院）, Gankaen Guesthouse) is a single-story mid-Meiji reception wing, moved around 1945 to its present site on the Gankaen estate in Tsukiya-cho, Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It now stands north of the main house, but it was originally attached to the southern end of the main house's west side. It measures 5 by 3 bays; the length was shortened when it was moved. The hipped roof, in the Yosemune-zukuri form, is covered with pan tiles, and the walls are exposed-post Shinkabe construction in white plaster. At 85 square meters it is the larger of the two single-story registered buildings at Gankaen.
Inside are an 8-mat Zashiki reception room and a 6-mat anteroom, wrapped by a veranda. The entrance, a Western-style room and the bathroom and kitchen areas were added in the alterations made at the time of the move.
Why the Gankaen Guesthouse Was Registered
The Gankaen Guesthouse was registered on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country. Its structure records how a shoin, a formal reception wing attached to the main house, was cut loose and rebuilt as a freestanding guest building when the estate reorganized after the war.
A shoin pairs a principal room with an anteroom for receiving visitors. Here the core survives intact, the 8-mat and 6-mat rooms with their surrounding veranda, and the entrance, Western room and services added at the move sit outside it. Separating the Meiji core from the mid-1940s additions is the easiest way to read the building.
The move roughly coincides with Gankaen's postwar reopening as a social club. Detached from the main house, it now serves, as its name says, as a building for guests.

The Only Hipped Roof
The Gankaen Guesthouse is the only registered building at Gankaen with a hipped roof. Sloping down on all four sides, it keeps the eaves low and gives the building a calm, horizontal profile among the gabled main house and storehouses.
Rooms and Veranda
Inside, note how the 8-mat and 6-mat rooms open into one space when the sliding partitions are drawn back, and how wide the veranda around them is. It is the basic shoin arrangement: a room for the guest, a room beside it, and a veranda linking both to the outside.
