What Is the Gankaen Storehouse?
The Gankaen Storehouse (巖華園蔵, Gankaen Kura) is a mid-Meiji earthen storehouse on the Gankaen estate in Tsukiya-cho, Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, now fitted out as guest rooms, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It stands at the far western edge of the plot, west of the main house. The two-story Dozo-zukuri block is 3 bays by 2 with its ridge running north to south, a separate set-on gabled roof of pan tiles, white Shikkui walls and a door in the center of the east side. With a building area of 21 square meters, it is the smallest of the seven registered buildings at Gankaen.
Why the Gankaen Storehouse Was Registered
The Gankaen Storehouse was registered on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country. It is a clear case of a building made to keep goods safe being turned into a place for people to sleep as the estate became an inn.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it now holds one guest room downstairs and two upstairs. To make that work, a lean-to eave, or Geya, was run around all four sides of the ground floor, and the upper windows on the east and south were reworked. You can read the whole adaptation from outside: a closed, nearly windowless box given light, shelter and easier access.
The storehouse frame is still there, though: the set-on roof, the plaster walls, the central east door. Stand under the new eave and look up, and the line between the added parts and the Meiji-era body is easy to find.
What to Look For at the Gankaen Storehouse
The Wraparound Eave
On the ground floor, the Gankaen Storehouse is ringed by a low eave. Where a storehouse wall would normally rise straight from the ground, this extra roof makes the building read more like a small cottage than a strongroom.
Two Storehouses Side by Side
Above the eave sits the set-on roof, the same system used on the Gankaen New Storehouse next door. Comparing the two is instructive: the older New Storehouse of 1862 has a black plaster base and nearly twice the floor area, while the Gankaen Storehouse is plain white throughout.
Visiting the Gankaen Storehouse
Because the Gankaen Storehouse is used as guest rooms, assume you can only see the inside by staying in it. Ask by phone whether these rooms can be requested when you book.
The exterior is visible if you walk to the west side of the main house, just south of the New Storehouse; it is hidden from the front gate. Confirm with the inn in advance whether sightseeing-only visits and photography are allowed.
