What Is the Gankaen Club (Former Stable)?
The Gankaen Club (Former Stable) (巖華園倶楽部（旧馬屋）, Gankaen Kurabu) is a single-story mid-Meiji timber stable on the eastern edge of the Gankaen estate in Tsukiya-cho, Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, converted into a reception room and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
It runs north from the vestibule at the north end of the Kojitei storehouse and is long and narrow, 5.5 bays by 1.5 bays, with its ridge running north to south under a gabled roof of pan tiles. The walls are exposed-post Shinkabe construction in white Shikkui plaster over a base of clapboard held by vertical battens, and high windows open on the east side. The building area is 57 square meters.
It shares its name with the Gankaen Club, the private social club founded here after the Second World War. Ashikaga City explains that Gankaen reopened as this club and later became an inn.
Why the Gankaen Club Was Registered
The Gankaen Club was registered on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country. It joins the Kojitei to the south and, via the eastern wall, the front gate, forming part of the row that defines the estate's eastern edge. That gate, storehouse and stable survive together is what lets you read the outer frame of the compound.
Inside is a reception room with an earthen floor and the roof framing left open. Stables normally had unfloored earth underfoot and often no ceiling, so the present room, as the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it, reuses the bones of the stable to receive guests. The narrow 1.5-bay width preserves the original scale of the stable.
What to Look For at the Gankaen Club
The Open Roof Frame
Once inside the Gankaen Club, look up. With no ceiling, the rafters, beams and roof trusses are all visible, and they draw your eye down the length of the narrow hall.
The High East Windows
On the east side, windows sit well above eye level. Built against the boundary wall, the building draws light in from high up, and from the courtyard the windows form a band along the top of the white wall.
Battened Clapboard
The lower walls are horizontal boards held by vertical battens. Exposed posts, white plaster and a dark wooden base match the neighboring gate and side walls.

The Gankaen Club is used as a reception room. Whether you can enter during a meal or stay, or just to look, is something to confirm by phone in advance.
From outside, it lies to the left inside the front gate along the wall. The joint with the Kojitei at its south end and the high east windows are visible from inside the compound. Ask the staff before photographing.
