What Is the Gankaen Front Gate?
The Gankaen Front Gate (巖華園表門, Gankaen Omotemon) is a mid-Meiji bracket-arm gate at the center of the eastern boundary of the Gankaen estate in Tsukiya-cho, Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
In a bracket-arm gate, or udegimon, short timber arms project from the posts to carry the overhang of the roof. The Gankaen Front Gate is 18 shaku wide, about 5.5 meters, under a gabled roof of pan tiles. Double doors hang in the central 9 shaku; the side bays are white Shikkui plaster above a skirting of sasarako clapboard.
Buttress walls and side walls extend from the gate to north and south, also timber with tiled coping and Shitami-itabari clapboard below. The registration includes 18 meters of wall, and on the south the wall runs straight into the former stable building.
Why the Gankaen Front Gate Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs classes the Gankaen Front Gate not as a building but as an "other structure," registered on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country.
Its value lies less in the gate alone than in the continuous edge it forms. Gate, buttresses, side walls and the stable that meets them share the same tiled roofs and the same clapboard base, so from outside the whole eastern boundary reads as one line. And because the main house stands directly opposite, facing east, gate and house share a single axis.
Sasarako clapboard uses vertical battens notched to fit over each overlapping board, a fussier finish than plain battens. At the Gankaen Front Gate it appears only on the side bays, the most visible surfaces, while the side walls make do with ordinary clapboard: effort spent where visitors look first.
What to Look For at the Gankaen Front Gate
The Bracket Arms
Stand under the eaves of the Gankaen Front Gate and look up. The arms jut out from the posts to catch the beams, and the gabled roof rests on them. That is why the posts look slender for the size of the roof above.
Plaster and Notched Battens
On either side of the doors, drop your eyes to the lower half of the white walls and you will see the notched battens set at regular intervals. Compare them with the side walls to see the difference in finish.
The View Through the Gate
Step through the Gankaen Front Gate and the main house is directly ahead, with the former stable and the Kojitei lined up along the wall to your left. Pause one step short of the threshold to see the main house framed in the opening.
Visiting the Gankaen Front Gate
Everyone who comes to the Gankaen inn passes through the Gankaen Front Gate, so guests booked for a meal or a stay can study both faces of it. If you want to enter the grounds only to look, phone ahead to ask whether that is possible.
The outer face, with its side walls, is best taken in from in front of the gate. From inside you can see how the buttress walls are built and where the southern wall joins the stable. The estate is private property, so ask the staff before photographing.
