About Teraoka Itoten
Teraoka Itoten (寺岡糸店, Teraoka Itoten) is a thread wholesaler's merchant premises in Tenmyōchō, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, whose five structures, from a storehouse of 1874 to a gate of 1934, were entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on December 5, 2019. The name means "Teraoka Thread Shop", and the buildings belong to the company Teraoka Itoten, a general partnership.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes Teraoka Itoten as a merchant house in the center of Sano's old town. The register lists four buildings (the shop, the main house, the bunko storehouse and the stone storehouse) and one gate. In its note on the stone storehouse, the Agency points to raw thread stored there as a link to the firm's history in the thread trade, and the whole sequence survives, with the shopfront on the road and the storehouses still standing at the back of the plot.
Five Structures Built Over Sixty Years
The five registered structures at Teraoka Itoten span about sixty years. The national database gives the following dates and forms.
- Bunko storehouse: 1874, remodeled around 1933. Earthen-walled storehouse, 2 storeys, tiled roof, 32 m²
- Stone storehouse: 1919. Stone, 1 storey, tiled roof, 73 m²
- Shop: 1933. Timber, 2 storeys with a 1-storey part, tiled roof, 206 m²
- Main house: 1933. Timber, 2 storeys, tiled roof, 125 m²
- Great gate: 1934. Timber, 3.1 m wide, with sleeve fences on both sides
The Meiji-period bunko storehouse is the oldest, the stone storehouse followed in the Taisho era, and the shop and main house went up in 1933, around the time the old storehouse was refaced. The gate came a year later. Read together, the dates suggest a firm that kept its older storehouses and then rebuilt its whole street front in the early Showa years.
After a recommendation by the Council for Cultural Affairs on July 19, 2019, the five were registered together on December 5, 2019, as registration numbers 09-0245 to 09-0249. Each one was listed as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country under the Registered Tangible Cultural Property system.
How the Teraoka Itoten Plot Is Laid Out
The Teraoka Itoten shop faces south onto the old road, with the great gate, used for bringing in goods, standing just to its east. Living quarters arranged in a U shape run back from the shop, and the main house joins the shop's rear on the west side.
The bunko storehouse is attached to the northwest corner of the main house and runs north to south along the western edge of the plot. The stone storehouse sits in the middle of the north side, facing south. Walking in from the road, you would pass from the shop to the house and then to the storehouses.
The wall finishes tell the buildings apart. The shop and main house have plaster walls above clapboard dadoes, the bunko storehouse wears a cast artificial-stone finish made to look like masonry, and only the stone storehouse is built of real Ōya stone. Each member page covers one structure in detail.
Visiting Teraoka Itoten
Teraoka Itoten is company property, and we found no notice of regular or special public openings (checked October 2026). With no arrangement for entering the grounds, a visit means looking from the street. The shop on the road and the great gate to its east can be seen from outside, while the main house and the two storehouses stand inside the plot and we could not confirm how much of them is visible. There is no official guidance on photography; if you take pictures from the road, avoid capturing the business or the people who live and work here.
The nearest station is Sano, served by the JR Ryōmō Line and the Tōbu Sano Line. Teraoka Itoten lies southwest of the station, about 600 m in a straight line, or roughly a 10-minute walk.
