About the Teraoka Itoten Shop

The Teraoka Itoten Shop (寺岡糸店店舗, Teraoka Itoten Tenpo) is a timber shop building of 2 storeys with a single-storey part, built in 1933 in Tenmyōchō, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on December 5, 2019. It has a tiled roof and a building area of 206 m².

Of the five registered structures belonging to the thread wholesaler Teraoka Itoten, this is the one that meets the old road directly. It faces south, and the great gate added in 1934 stands beside it to the east.

The Street Front of the Teraoka Itoten Shop

The shop is covered by a hipped roof of pantiles. A lean-to roof, or Geya, projects across the front below the upper floor, so a second, lower eave line runs along the street at about head height.

The walls are finished in white lime plaster, with overlapping clapboards along the lower part. The pale upper wall and the dark band of boarding at its foot split the broad facade into two calm horizontal layers.

A Double-Height Shop Floor Inside the Teraoka Itoten Shop

Behind the facade, the front part of the Teraoka Itoten Shop rises through both storeys as a single double-height space. There is no upper floor over the selling area, which makes it far more open than the two-storey exterior suggests.

Living quarters arranged in a U shape are joined to the back of the shop. Trade happened at the street end and family life went on further in, and the main house built in the same year adjoins the rear of the shop on its west side.

Why the Teraoka Itoten Shop Was Registered

The Teraoka Itoten Shop was listed as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving the street a solid, substantial character, and the recognition rests on an early Showa merchant's frontage that still faces the road in central Sano.

The Agency also describes the great gate next door as being in keeping with the shop. Seen together, the two widen the frontage the firm presents to the road, with the shop acting as the face of the whole property.

Seeing the Teraoka Itoten Shop

The Teraoka Itoten Shop is owned by the company Teraoka Itoten, and we found no notice of the interior being opened to visitors (checked October 2026), so the double-height shop floor cannot be seen. Because the building stands on the road, the hipped roof, the lean-to across the front and the plaster and clapboard walls are all visible from the street. From the far side of the road you can take in the full frontage together with the gate to the east. There is no official guidance on photography, so please do not get in the way of the business. Directions are on the Teraoka Itoten page.
